Intensive training for a full academic year that includes interns representing a variety of professions is provided by a consortium of community-based agencies serving the elderly in suburban Chicago. The impetus for the Kott Gerontology Scholars Program, supported since 2004 by grants from the Russell and Josephine Kott Memorial Charitable Trust, involves training interns to develop skills that prepare them to create and deliver services to senior citizens after graduation. Practically 90% of Kott Gerontology Scholars alumni continue to serve seniors through non-profit organizations after their internships.
